Chemistry – Introduction, Branches, Concepts, Free Resources

May 10, 2020 by Veerendra

What is Chemistry?

Chemistry is the study of matter and its properties. It is how and why substances combine or separate to form other substances and how the substances interact with energy. Chemistry is a subdiscipline of science that deals with the study of matter and the substances that constitute it. The Subject primarily focuses on ions, atoms, molecules which in turn forms elements and compounds. Chemical species interact with each other and often form chemical bonds. You will get to know the interactions between matter and energy in Chemistry.

Relation between Chemistry and Other Branches of Science

Science is a systematic study of the natural universe, its structure, and everything it includes. Due to the vastness of natural Universe Science has been divided into various disciplines that cover certain aspects of the Universe. Primary Subcategories of science under which these disciplines can be grouped are as follows

Formal Sciences: It involves the study of language disciplines concerning formal systems. Scientific disciplines that come under this category are logic and mathematics. It can be treated as “Language of Science”.

Natural Sciences: It is the study of natural phenomena through experiments and observations. Biology, Physics, Chemistry come under this category.

Social Sciences: Includes the study of human societies and relationships between humans that dwell in these societies. Scientific disciplines that fall under this category are psychology, sociology, and economics.

When it comes to the relationship between major branches of sciences, chemistry lies close to all of these. Chemistry is a central science that has its roots in several other disciplines of science.

Branches of Chemistry

Primary Branches of Chemistry are physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry, etc. In addition to these, there will be several specialized fields of chemistry that deal with cross-disciplinary matters. Few other disciplines include medicinal chemistry, neurochemistry, nuclear chemistry, materials chemistry, polymer chemistry, environmental chemistry, and thermochemistry.

Chemistry Examples in our Day to Day Lives

Chemistry reactions take place constantly around us. The human body undergoes thousands of chemical reactions every day. All the body’s actions right from the digestion of food to the movement of muscles. Some other examples in day to day lives of humans are as follows

  • Photosynthesis allows plants to convert water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide into glucose, and oxygen is a chemical reaction. It is the Process on which the Food Chain is built.
  • Soaps and Chemicals we use in hygiene process is a chemical process called Emulsification.
  • Sunscreen Lotions which we use to protect the human body from harmful UV-A and UV-B radiation is based on Chemistry.
