Animals Vocabulary List | Animal Names in English

Animals are broadly classified into two types namely Vertebrates(Animals with a backbone) and  Invertebrates(Animals without a backbone). They are further classified into subcategories and we have listed all the Vocabulary on Animals & their Names with pictures in English.

Vertebrates

Vertebrates include all species of animals having Vertebrata. These make upto less than 5% of all animal species and the rest all belong to invertebrates. Vertebrates are further classified into 5 small groups namely

  • Mammals
  • Birds
  • Fish
  • Amphibians
  • Reptiles

Mammals

Mammals are vertebrates that belong to the class Mammalia and can be distinguished from reptiles by seeing hair, three middle ear bones, and mammary glands. In Mammal Species females take care of their young ones by giving them the milk secreted using mammary glands.

Birds

Birds belong to a group of endothermic vertebrates and can be recognized by looking their feathers, toothless beaked jaws, high metabolic rate, four-chambered heart, lays hard-shelled eggs, strong yet lightweight skeleton.

Fish

Fish is gill-bearing aquatic craniate animals and lack limbs. These are important resources for humans all over the world when it comes to food. Fishkeepers raise them and exhibit them in public aquaria. They play a vital role in our culture through ages, religious symbols, serving as deities, the subject of art, books, and movies.

Amphibians

Amphibians are tetrapod vertebrates belonging to class amphibia. They have a wide variety of habitats and the majority of the species live in fossorial, terrestrial, arboreal, or freshwater aquatic ecosystems.

Reptiles

Reptiles are four-limbed vertebrate animals belonging to Class Reptilia and have scaly skin. They are cold-blooded and are born on land. Snakes, Crocodiles, Lizards, Turtles, and Alligators belong to the Reptile Family.

Invertebrates

Invertebrates are the animals that don’t develop a vertebral column usually referred to as backbone or spine. Common Examples of Invertebrates are Insects, Crabs, Snails, Octopus, Starfish, Jellyfish, and Worms, etc.
