Description of the School Building Vocabulary Words

The classroom

The classroom is a room in the school building where lessons are taught to the students. All children who attend school go to the classroom daily to learn and meet with their fellow students and teachers.

In other words, a classroom is a space for learning and social interaction among the students and the teachers. There are generally several classrooms in one school for different classes, year groups and academic subjects.

The library

The library is a large room or hall within the school where the students, staff, and teachers of the school have access to various resources. It provides textbooks and other additional reading materials for different subjects as per the requirement of teachers and students.

It also provides relevant documents and information helpful in the school’s educational programs and extracurricular activities.

The principal’s office

The principal’s office is a functional administrative unit of the school. It is located within the school building from which the principal fulfils his or her administrative duties and roles with the assistance of the school’s clerical and other staffs.

The computer room

The computer room, also known as the computer lab, serves as the centre for teaching the computer to classes, usually by a professional computer teacher. Classroom teachers also use the lab with their classes for research or for creating presentations and technology-based projects.

The music room

The music room is a large room with customised stages or floors for orchestra and choir rehearsals. The area is split into a classroom area and a performance area. It is furnished with a whiteboard, music system or sound system and wi-fi for direct streaming of music and music video clips during practice and rehearsals.

The art room

The art room in a school is used for education in the visual arts.

The art room encourages each child to be creative, curious, and original in their work while studying various art forms such as 2D and 3D art and exploring mediums like oil pastels, pencil colouring, acrylic, charcoal, water colouring, dry pastels, clay art, and many other art forms.

The playground

The playground in a school is a large open area with a hard surface just outside a school building, where the school children can play and perform other physical activities.

The school playground provides a protected outdoor environment that encourages children to use their energy in healthy interactions with each other.

The school grounds

The school grounds are land or parts of land that is used for the provision of academic or extracurricular programs by the school. They can offer a valuable and healthy learning environment, extending and deepening to the subjects taught indoors.

The schoolyard

The schoolyard is an outside area next to or surrounding a school where students can play or sports for recreation.

The gymnasium

The gymnasium is a particular room designed and equipped for various sports, physical training, and exercise in the school. The primary aim of the gymnasium is to help the students develop more strength and stamina in terms of their health and other activities to make them fit and give them a change from their daily routine of studies and classes.

The science room

The science room in a school is a room used for educating the students in the sciences. It is an exciting place full of fun experiments and interesting lessons. However, one needs to be careful in the science room as carelessness can lead to fatal accidents as many kinds of machines and chemicals are kept in this room.

The cafeteria

The cafeteria is a dining area in the school building, where one can purchase food items or bring meals from home and eat.

The lockers

The lockers provide a safe place to store personal items throughout the day in the school, where students can store textbooks, lunch, and other necessary belongings.

The teachers’ room

The teachers’ room or the staffroom in a school is a common room that is a communal work area where teachers have their individual desks and prepare lessons if they do not have a personal office. The teachers or school staff also uses this room to relax, discuss work, eat, drink, and socialise when they are not taking classes.

The girls’ room

The girls’ room in a school is a separate restroom that is used only by female students.

The boys’ room

The boys’ room in a school is a separate restroom that is used only by male students.

The pool

The pool is a swimming pool inside the school premises and is a great way to teach kids how to swim and be safe around water. Schools have pools also for physical education classes, recreational activities, leisure, and competitive athletics such as swimming teams.

The auditorium

The auditorium is a large room with rows of seats and a stage used for performances and public events or meetings. An auditorium is generally soundproof and is equipped with a projector, effective & modern light and a sound system. It hosts numerous events, including Annual day, Award functions, Inter-School Competitions and Zonal level competitions.

The locker room

The locker room in a school is furnished with lockers, used as a place for changing clothes and storing belongings.

The football field

The football field, also called the football pitch, is an area of grass where football is played.

The baseball field

The baseball field in a school, also known as a ball field or baseball diamond, is the field upon which baseball is played.

The parking lot

The parking lot in a school is an open area designated to parking vehicles of the teachers, students, staff or the school’s vehicles like buses and vans.
