**Sets and Representations **

**Set:**A well defined collection of distinct objects

**Types of Sets**

**Empty or null set –**set containing no elements, φ or { }**Singleton set –**set containing a single element**Finite set –**set containing no element or a definite number of elements**Infinite set –**set containing infinite number of elements**Equivalent sets –**sets containing same number of elements**Equal sets –**sets containing exactly the same elements**Subset –**A ⊂ B if every element of set A is also an element of set B**Superset –**B is a superset of A if A ⊂ B**Proper subset –**A ⊂ B and A ≠ B**Improper subsets –**null set and the given set itself**Power set –**the collection of all subsets of set A,denoted as P(A)**Universal set –**the superset of all subsets under discussion

**Operations on Sets**

- (A∪B)={x : x ∈ A or x ∈ B}
- (A∩B)=(x: x ∈ A and x ∈ B}
- A-B{ x : x ∈ A and x ∉ B}
- A ΔB = (A-B) ∪ (B-A)

**Cardinal Number of Finite Sets**

**Cardinal number –**the number of elements in a finite set A, denoted as n (A)- If A is a set with n (A) = m, then n(P(A)) = 2
^{m}i.e., total number of subsets of A = 2^{m } - n(A ∪ B) = n(A) + n(B) – n(A∩B)
- n(A – B) = n(A) – n(A ∩ B)
- n(A Δ B) = n(A – B) + n(B – A)

= n(A∪B)- n(A ∩ B) - n(A’) = n(u) – n(A)
- n(A ∪B ∪ C) = n(A) + n(B) + n(C) – n(A ∩ B) – n(B ∩ C) – n(C ∩ A) + n(A ∩ B ∩ C)
